About Counterfactual

A small software company in Hong Kong, making AI tools for one person's day.

What we do

Counterfactual Limited designs and operates a family of small products that use language models to take a specific chore off your hands: turning a cooking video into a recipe, reading the morning papers, illustrating and annotating a long book, answering questions from years of mail. Each product is narrow on purpose. We would rather do one job completely than ten jobs halfway.

The products are built and run by us, on infrastructure we operate, and published under the sameatoms.com domain: Cooking Videos at cooking.sameatoms.com, Reading at reading.sameatoms.com, Deep Read at deepread.sameatoms.com, and Read Mail, which runs on your own computer. Our apps for iPhone and Android are published under the same company name.

Why “Counterfactual”

A counterfactual is the version of events that did not happen. For every evening spent transcribing a video, skimming forty articles or hunting for last year's invoice, there is a counterfactual evening in which that part was already done and only the interesting part was left. We build the tools that make the second evening the real one.

How we work

We are a small team of engineers, and we use everything we ship, every day, before anyone else does. A feature that we would not want in our own reader or our own kitchen does not go in. That shows in the details: summaries always link to their source, recipe steps jump to their moment in the video, and deleting an account really deletes it.

We do not use your content to train models, and we do not sell data. Where a product can keep your data on your own device, it does. The full picture is in our Privacy Policy.
